Zinc could help as non-antibiotic treatment for UTIs
March 8, 2019
New details about the
role of zinc in our immune system could help the development of new
non-antibiotic treatment strategies for bacterial diseases, such as urinary
tract infections (UTIs). UTIs are one of the most common bacterial infections
worldwide and can lead to serious conditions such as kidney infection and
sepsis. A team of researchers examined how our immune system uses zinc to fight
uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) -- the major cause of UTIs.
How zinc starves lethal bacteria to stop
infection
November 11, 2013
Researchers have found
that zinc can ‘starve’ one of the world’s most deadly bacteria by preventing
its uptake of an essential metal.
Zinc helps against infection by tapping brakes
in immune response
New research suggests
that zinc helps control infections by gently tapping the brakes on the immune
response in a way that prevents out-of-control inflammation that can be damaging
and even deadly.

role in hospital-acquired infections.
Got Zinc? New Zinc Research Suggests Novel
Therapeutic Targets
July 31, 2009
Everyone knows that
vitamins "from A to zinc" are important for good health. Now, a new
research study suggests that zinc may be pointing the way to new therapeutic
targets for fighting infections. Specifically, scientists found that zinc not
only supports healthy immune function, but increases activation of the cells (T
cells) responsible for destroying viruses and bacteria.

Providing zinc
supplements to older adults in nursing homes increased their serum zinc levels and
improved their immune response, providing potential protection against
infection. The research group's previous work found that nursing home residents
had low zinc levels.
